At the Green Primary debate in Madrid on Wednesday December 18, Jose Bove, Monica Frassoni, Rebecca Harms and Ska Keller launched a plea for more solidarity in Europe, and an end to the austerity that has had a devastating effect on countries in Southern Europe.

Democracy, sustainablity, employment, the rise of right wing populist parties, political transparency, climate change, and financial market regulation were topics debated by the four Contenders who spent over two hours outlining their vision for Europe’s future. Questions were provided by civil society organisations such as Renewable Foundation (environmental), ILO (migration), FLGTB (LGBT rights), Civio (democracy/transparency), PUM+J (anti-poverty), Kuorum (direct democracy) and Agora voting (direct democracy) who were present, as well as by an audience of over 100 people in the venue and by Twitter users watching the debate online.

The four Green Primary Contenders agreed that we need more, rather than less Europe if we are to change the policies that are driving the economic and social model that has caused such damage in the EU. They called for a change in Europe’s energy model, saying that marrying it to the Green New Deal will help provide sustainable employment for future generations, and help combat climate change.

The debate highlighted the fact that there is another way to do politics. Remember, you decide Europe. Have your say in the Green Primary!
